FOR LOW INCOME COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Maps That Make A Difference

When the Maryland Center for Community Development (MCCD) wanted to show policy makers that expanding the services of check cashing facilities would most likely impact low income communities, they came to CLICD for a method that would deliver complex information in a way that was easy to understand and had lasting visual impact.

Industry lobbyist's original argument was that the expansion of check cashing facilities services would benefit middle income families. CLICD created maps that helped MCCD show policy makers that the majority of check cashing facilities are predominately located in low income neighborhoods and communities where 50% or more of the population is non-white. In the end, the group found its solution in maps. Colorful, informative and readable, the maps told a persuasive story that an expansion of services would most likely affect their current clientele lower income residents.

A New Communication Tool

Using Geographic Information System (GIS) software, we can create maps for your group to enhance your work by giving you a new communication tool.  Our maps take data and geographic locations and combine them to illustrate information in an eye-catching way. These visually interesting maps will boost your ability to get your message out to your constituents, funders, elected officials, the media and government agencies.

Almost all information is suited to mapping, from hundreds of demographic characteristics of a neighborhood, city, county or state to the level of investment from government programs or other privately funded initiatives. Maps can be used for project reports, funding proposals or community meetings. We can make maps in various dimensions, from the size of a standard sheet of paper to large enough to hang on a wall.  A map can encompass a single street or the entire country, with many possibilities in between.
